Liu Chang is a graduate of the Master’s programme in Music Education at Belgorod State Institute of Arts and Culture (BSIAC). Having come to Russia from China, she not only chose a new city in which to pursue her education, but also found in Belgorod a second creative home.

“I chose Russia and Belgorod because our countries share warm and respectful relations. The climate here is also similar to that of my hometown, which creates a comfortable environment for studying,” Liu Chang explains.

Throughout her studies, she actively participated in piano competitions and achieved notable results of which she is proud. At first, the language barrier presented a significant challenge, and she often relied on an interpreter. However, music proved to be stronger than words:

“The language of music is universal. The lessons combined intensive study with the opportunity to immerse myself in the creative process,” Liu Chang says.

Her experience in Belgorod was also enriched by the friendships she formed. The people she met in Russia supported her throughout her studies, and many of these connections have remained strong even after her return to China.

“People in Russia are very friendly, and I truly appreciate that,” Liu Chang says.

Graduate Success Story: Ernani Prazeres

Ernani Prazeres is a graduate of the Institute of Economics and Management at Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU). He came to Russia to pursue his education from Luanda, the capital of Angola.

In 2013, Ernani successfully graduated from the university with a Master’s degree. His studies were funded through a state scholarship programme.

According to Ernani, he was initially apprehensive about coming to Russia, as he had very little knowledge of the Russian language and Russian culture. However, with the support of his professors and friends, he was able to adapt quickly.

“I read a lot about Russia and was fascinated by its history. When I arrived in Belgorod, my lack of knowledge of the language was a major concern. However, within just eight months, I was able to speak Russian quite well. The teachers at the preparatory faculty and my Russian friends helped me immensely. I am still in touch with some of them through social media,” Ernani recalls.

During his studies, he took an active part in university life, participated in activities organized by the African students’ association and his student residence, and served as the student representative for African students.

Today, Ernani Prazeres works as a Senior Officer in the Market Research and Competitive Behaviour Department of the Ministry of Finance of Angola and is also engaged in entrepreneurial activities.

Graduate Success Story: Kumu-Buya Morabandza

Kumu-Buya Morabandza was born in the Republic of the Congo. He spent his early childhood in the small town of Owando, after which his family moved to the country’s capital, Brazzaville.

His interest in his future profession emerged during his teenage years. His aspiration to become a geologist was inspired by engaging lectures delivered by one of his college professors. After completing 13 years of schooling, Kumu-Buya enrolled in a related field of study, as the specialization he sought was not available at universities in his home country. During his studies, he distinguished himself as one of the institution’s top-performing students.

Following his third year of study, he was given an opportunity to continue his education abroad. He seized this opportunity and travelled to Russia to study at Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU).

According to Kumu-Buya, his parents were initially apprehensive about his decision to travel to Russia, as international media had often portrayed the country negatively. These concerns, however, proved unfounded. He received a warm welcome in Belgorod, and his adaptation to his new environment proceeded successfully.

His first period of study was challenging. He had to complete a pre-university preparatory programme and learn Russian at the Faculty for International Students. For someone who had never previously encountered the Cyrillic alphabet, this was a considerable challenge. Nevertheless, just one year later, he enrolled in the first year of the Ecology and Environmental Management programme at BelSU’s Institute of Earth Sciences.

Kumu-Buya continued his academic journey after completing his Bachelor’s degree, first pursuing a Master’s degree and subsequently enrolling in a PhD programme in Geoecology. He is currently preparing to defend his PhD dissertation, which focuses on the environmental condition of Belgorod’s urban environment, particularly the issue of heavy metal pollution.

Alongside his research, he conducts laboratory classes for students, teaching them methods for analysing water and soil samples. According to Kumu-Buya, working with students is deeply rewarding, as it gives him an opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with the next generation of specialists.

At Kumu-Buya’s initiative, Belgorod State University also established a cooperation agreement with Denis Sassou Nguesso University in the Republic of the Congo. Under the agreement, faculty members of the Congolese university will have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies and undertake research internships in Belgorod.

A Story of Courage: Dr. Alfasih M. Jamal

Today, we would like to tell you about a person whose dedication and achievements are a true source of pride — orthopaedic trauma surgeon Dr. Alfasih M. Jamal, a graduate of Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU). He was awarded a medal in recognition of his medical assistance to military personnel and civilians in the area of the special military operation in the Kursk Region.

Behind this recognition lies a genuine story of courage, professionalism and dedication. Dr. Alfasih did not shy away from working under extremely challenging conditions. During the pandemic, he worked in the “red zone,” performed emergency surgeries and continues to provide medical care to those most in need. Through his work, he not only treats physical injuries but also helps restore hope.

Dr. Alfasih has performed more than 500 surgical procedures and has received a letter of appreciation from the Kursk Regional Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital, recognition from leading medical institutions, as well as letters of appreciation from the Governor of the Kursk Region, the Pokolenie Foundation and the Ministry of Health. Most importantly, however, he has earned the sincere gratitude of the patients he supported during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

His professional achievements are defined by compassion, exceptional expertise, remarkable composure and unwavering dedication to his profession.

When I first arrived in Belgorod, everything seemed new and unfamiliar: a different language, a different culture and a new way of life. But it was here, at Belgorod State University (BelSU), that I took my first step towards a profession that has since become my life’s work.

My name is Sajid Qadiri. I am a graduate of Belgorod State University, and over the years I have travelled a path from a student at the Preparatory Faculty to earning a Master’s degree in Law. Today, I live in Moscow, work as a lawyer and run my own company — all built on the strong foundation that my university provided.

What did BelSU give me? Not just knowledge, but also strength of character, perseverance, teamwork skills and the ability to make responsible decisions. My professors and mentors taught me valuable lessons that continue to help me move forward and achieve my goals.

Even during my student years, I actively participated in cultural and social events, conferences and various projects. This experience became a kind of training ground for my professional life and helped me confidently take the next steps towards my ambitions.

Recently, I visited France and Germany, including Ilmenau University of Technology. Alhusni Nour Al-Din, from Syria, has transformed his academic ambitions into a professional mission. His Master’s degree in International Relations from Belgorod State University (BelSU) became not simply an academic qualification, but a gateway to the world of diplomacy, cross-cultural dialogue and international academic cooperation.

His decision to study in Russia was a conscious one, motivated by several factors:

Hello! My name is Faizullo Yakubov, and I am a 2019 graduate of the Institute of Intercultural Communication and International Relations (IICIR) at Belgorod State University (BelSU).

Studying at Belgorod State University was one of the most important stages of my life. Thanks to the excellent learning environment and the high level of professionalism of the university’s faculty, I graduated with honours. These years gave me not only valuable knowledge but also a strong foundation for my future professional journey.

After graduation, I travelled to China, where I completed a three-month training programme. I then continued my education at Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod, pursuing a Master’s degree in Management.

After returning to Tajikistan, I began my career at one of the country’s leading banks. Today, I work as a Corporate Client Acquisition Manager and also serve as Acting Head of a Banking Service Centre. My work involves negotiations, developing business relationships and finding solutions that help both businesses and the bank move forward.

I can confidently say that I am working in my professional field and that the education I received in Russia has helped me become a competitive specialist. It taught me to believe in myself, take responsibility and remain open to new opportunities.

I look back on my years at BelSU with great warmth — they were vibrant, meaningful and filled with friendship and inspiration. Belgorod and the university will always hold a special place in my heart.

“I followed in my father’s footsteps, but found my own path in medicine,” says the graduate.

• Finding humour in difficulties: today, Yaman looks back on those days with a smile.

One of the things that impressed Yaman most was the sense of unity he experienced during national celebrations, particularly Victory Day and Flag Day. Sport also became an important part of his experience in Russia. As a member of the international team “Lions of BelSU”, he celebrated a significant achievement when the team took first place in the fifth league of the Belgorod Summer Mini-Football Championship.

After receiving his degree, Yaman is determined to continue his education through residency training, deepen his medical knowledge and build his professional career in Russia — the country he now considers home.

On February 20, 2026, in Stary Oskol, Zana Abbas was awarded the prestigious title of “Student of the Year.” He noted that receiving this title was a great honor for him and the result of the continuous support, mentorship, and encouragement of those who had been by his side throughout his journey.

Zana expressed particular gratitude to his academic supervisor, Tatyana Vladimirovna Samosenkova, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor. Her professionalism, wise guidance, and confidence in his research played an important role in his academic and personal development.

SHARING HIS STORY ESPECIALLY FOR AIGSB

From an Angolan student to a military surgeon who has performed more than 8,000 surgical procedures in the special military operation zone.

Manuel Nelson Tomas was born on April 6, 1988, in the city of Lobito, Angola, into a family of educators — Manuel Alexandre Zeca and Manuel Adriana Cuva. From an early age, his life was shaped by education, discipline, and a strong commitment to personal development.

In 2010, he came to Russia and enrolled at Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU) to study General Medicine on a state-funded scholarship. He subsequently completed a surgical residency and later continued his education at a university in Vitebsk, specializing in cardiac surgery.

However, according to Manuel, it was his education in Russia that laid the foundation for his professional development:

“My education in Russia gave me a solid foundation for professional growth. It was here that I found my professional calling and became a military surgeon.”

On April 15, 2024, Manuel Nelson Tomas joined the military service under contract. He currently serves in Medical Company No. 752 in the Luhansk People’s Republic. As part of his service, he was assigned to a hospital in the city of Svatovo, where he has provided surgical care to military personnel for nearly two years.

During this period, he has performed more than 8,000 surgical procedures of varying complexity, ranging from emergency interventions to high-technology operations requiring maximum concentration, precision, and professional expertise.

🩺 One of his most memorable experiences during his university years was practical training in anatomy:

“It was the practical classes in the morgue that taught me to understand anatomy and properly plan future surgical interventions. This experience played a key role in developing my clinical and surgical thinking.”

Manuel expresses his particular gratitude to the professors at BelSU, emphasizing that a rigorous approach to student training and a strong practical foundation help prepare true professionals who are ready to meet the real challenges of their profession.

However, he considers the greatest achievement of his life to be neither his career nor his professional accomplishments.

“The most important event in my life was starting a family. I met the love of my life, and we have four children. They are my greatest source of support and inspiration.”

Since 2015, Manuel has lived in the Belgorod Region. He is an Orthodox Christian and plans to continue building his future in Russia. In the years ahead, he intends to pursue public and political activities and use his accumulated experience to contribute to the development of the healthcare system and support for medical professionals.

On Medical Workers’ Day, we would like to share the story of one of our graduates — a person who has devoted his life to medicine and today successfully combines clinical practice, research, and teaching.

Al-Kinani Idris Sabah was born in Baghdad and came to Russia in 2009 to pursue a medical education. According to him, his choice was motivated by the strong reputation of the Russian medical education system and the well-developed educational cooperation between Russia and the countries of the Middle East.

After graduating from university, Idris completed a surgical internship and began his professional career in healthcare. Today, he works as a highly qualified surgeon at the Belgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, in the Department of Purulent Surgery — one of the most challenging areas of surgical medicine. He is also an Associate Professor at the Department of Hospital Surgery.

An important stage in his professional development was his research career: Idris successfully defended his PhD thesis and was awarded the academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences.

Mentors and colleagues played an important role in his professional development, while Belgorod became the city where he was able to establish himself not only professionally but also personally. Here, he started a family, is raising a daughter, and continues to develop in the profession he loves.

Today, Idris teaches students, shares his expertise with future doctors, and helps patients every day, remaining dedicated to his calling.

Kapuku Tusseye from Angola distinguished himself during his studies not only as a successful student but also as an active leader of the student community.

From 2020 to 2024, he served as the head of the African Student Association and dormitory student community, supporting international students and helping them adapt to life and studies in Russia. His sense of responsibility and strong organizational skills made him an important source of support for many students.

Kapuku Tusseye graduated from Belgorod State University with honors, receiving a diploma with distinction — a testament to his high level of academic achievement and determination.

In recognition of his active community involvement and personal achievements, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Embassy of the Republic of Angola in Russia.
